Hi,

Anyone know if running standard Cat5 cable outside causes a lightning danger? I have read this on several sites however it will only be a run of 3 metres at 6 inches above ground level. Also i require two clients on end of the cable can i use 2 of the pairs in one cable? Or would i be better running 2 cables and using one pair from each? The total run is only 15 metres. Finally is the IDC tool used for adding telephone extensions suitable for use on the back of RJ45 wall sockets? any advice appreciated.

Doesn't cause a danger. Just a more likely damage to the NIC due to being closer to the high current of a lightning strike.
Run 2 cables. You are using 2 pair in a cable and using the alternate 4 wires would probably give enough crosstalk to make it give errors.
There are 2 sizes of blades for punchdown tools. Suspect that the phone one is the larger size and you will need the smaller. But it has been a long time, so the advice is suspect.
You could always get one of the small plastic tools. No cutoff available on it but the price is right. Think I paid $1 for the last one.
