running cat 5network on 2 pin phone patch panel?????

is there anyone out there who can help me i have recently started working in a school part time while i do my computer degree i have inhereted what i can only call a mess of a network which basicaly is a cat 5 network with a 2 pin phone patch panel this configuration has me beat
as it should not work from all i have been taught but 5 of the 6 pc's instaled on this part of the network do can anyone offer any idea as to how it is wired or should i just replace the old patch panel for a cat 5 one

no it looks just like a normal cat 5 panel but only has 2 wires inside it instead of the normal 8 thanks for you help

you can run ethernet on two pair ,

single pair could be modem ?

it's just two wires not two pairs and it should not work but some how it is for 6 out of the 7 pc's at that end of the school

could it be that it's using cat1 at half duplex if this is the case how do you set up a pc to run half duplex?

if it is apple-talk how do i set up pc's to run on it ?
