Hi all,

I'm buying a web site that's written in .asp and runs on a windows server.

I just want to know if it will run normally under a Unix server if I transfer it over. Are there any issues? Any caveats?

Yes, I know I can probably keep it under a windows platform, but I like Unix better and most of the scripts I use are written in .php and only run under Unix servers.

Thanks!

I hate to be so brutal, but the short answer is no. There are those that may give you false hope with apache::asp which is a mod_perl module that will run a very limited amount of asp. The whole truth is asp is written mostly with VBScript which is designed to be run on an IIS server which uses the M$ api. If you were a hosting provider, something like chilisoft's solution may be of interest. The draw back is the cost. You are talking about one website using it and I don't think that would quite justify the amount of money you would have to lay out for something like that. If this is a small site, one option may be to convert the asp to php. There are some asp to php converters out there but I don't know which is the best. I'm pretty sure in any case you will still have to fat finger some code to get each page to completely work under php. If this is not an option, we are back to option you mentioned. If you can't afford the chilisoft solution, you will need to have that particular website hosted by someone else.
