I have a requirement to run Apache directly from a CDR and have had no luck doing so.The problem I've run into is Apache must be able to write a process identification number to the httpd.pid file under the logs directory.I tried hard coding the httpd.pid file, which Apache does not like.I realize most people do not run Apache directly off of a CDR (defeats the purpose of true web services), but any suggestions of how to make Apache run from a CDR would be appreciated.
Thanks

I am encountering the same problem. I need Apache on a CD with PHP so i can promote a website.
Have you been successful?

Well, I imagine you could take the same approach as the single-floppy distributions of Linux, such as "tomsrtbt" (
These distributions unpack a compressed image from the floppy and then mount the Linux filesystem in memory on a virtual disk, or ramdisk, thus running a full operating system without touching the hard drive, but still having writeable directories for PIDs, etc...

So, if you are using Linux (as I guess is probable), your problem is not an Apache problem but a Unix filesystem problem. I don't know the exact methods to create and mount ramdisks, but it is a fairly common operation. Read the HOWTOs.
