I'm trying to develop a small UI which is to be used to choose which facility to run. The user (effectively) clicks a button and runs an executable program.

When this happens, the browser detects that I am downloading an executable file and asks if I want to save or open it. Clearly I always want to open it.

This is obviously a security issue but I hope to be able to get round it since it's running locally on the intranet. In fact it's even running on the same machine as the web host (Aopache Win32).

Is it possible to set the system to allow what I want and if so, how?

Under IE, Tools, Internet Options, Security

Do the entries for both the Internet Zone, and the Intranet Zone, as .asp and other active pages can confound the Security settings on the Intranet Zone depending on whether they are referenced by UNC or sharenames.

The entries you need should be obvious. If Active-X, java or whatever, set the security permissions appropriately.

In addition, add the Intranet site specificly as a
Trusted Zone"

You really should read this advisory by MS as to how it is possible that intranet access for java and active x objects can be viewed as a security breach:
Essentially the issue is that your hyperlinking needs to be adjusted for intranet access to convince Windows you are in a Trusted Zone. Follow all references from the article, as it resolves a lot of issues.

Best.

Many thanks. I'll give that article some serious study!
