I currently run Crystal 8.5, only because one of my applications that uses Crystal for its reports (Raiser's Edge) will not work with anything above 8.5. My other database application can and should be using at least ver.9, if not ver. 11.

Can I run two different versions of Crystal on the same machine?

Dear Harriet,

I have been running CR 8.5 and CR 10 together on the same machine for over a year.

Some caveats:

The app you install last will be the one that is ued if you double click on an rpt file. So, if you need to make sure that you are working with 8.5, you should always open the version of Crystal you need to work in and then open reports from there.

I have, on occasion, accidentally opened a report in a later version and saved it ... they are not backward compatible, so once saved in a later version you would have to rewrite.

Therefore, it is good practice to make a backup of a report prior to working on a report. Sounds time-consuming until you have to recreate a complex report from scratch.

I actually keep my reports separated by version and set the default reports directory for each to the different folders.

Also, while I haven't had the issue, two of my customers have had an issue that Parameter prompting just stopped. Uninstalling both version, cleaning out the registry, and reinstalling solved the issue. I don't know what they did and since I have a large number of clients and it only affected those two ... I am thinking a dll got corrupted or some other application affected them.

Whew, anyway, the bottom line is that if you work smart you shouldn't have any issues at all.

regards,

ro
