Rule to forward messages sent to a Public Folder

Can a public folder be setup to forward messages to a SMTP email address. The messages forward fine while staying within our network but when trying to forward them outside the network, they dont go through. Our exchange server is a smtp server

In exchange 5.5, you can set up a custom recipient, then set up you folder to send to this recipient using folder moderation(I recall....vaguely)
