rtvscan.exe (NAV) tries to access internet

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I couldn't find anything in the search or FAQs. Relevant threads or links are welcome. Rtvscan.exe (Norton Antivirus) tries to dial home sometimes. My sw firewall traps the connection. Does anybody know what kind of information it attempts to transmit, or is it just checking for updates?
