RTF Endnotes not recognised in Word 2003/2007

I have saved a document in RTF using Word 2000 which contains the instruction
\aftnnar
so that endnotes are rendered as Arabic numerals.

However, Word 2003/2007 does not recognise/interpret this instruction and renders the endnotes as Lowercase Roman numerals.

When I insert the instruction
\saftnnar
immediately afterwards the rendering becomes Arabic numerals.

Is this a backwards compatibility bug in Word 2003/2007 ?
