I am new to rss.
I have many questions.
What I would like to do is have information displayed like some of these samples.

I know I can buy these.
But what is important for me is to understand it.
Also how is xml used in this

XSL is the best technology to display RSS. It works like this:

1. Get your RSS (which IS XML, just in strict format known a RSS).

2. Transform the XML (RSS) into HTML using XSL.

3. Display HTML

The best place to learn most web stuff is:

http://www.w3schools.com/

Try some simple XSL to HTML and then look at RSS.
