Hello all. I have read that the max distance for an RS-232 cable at 19.2kbs is 50 feet. We need to make a RS-232 cable about 75 feet with a bit rate of 9600. Do you think this would still work? Thanks...

We have used a 100-metre connection over CAT5 cable before, so if you do experience any problems, you can simply make one up using some twisted pair.

Yes. It should work fine. You can make the connection easier by using modular adapters like the ones at the top cneter of this page:
If you have problems at fairly complete discussion of this issue can be found here:

RS-232 is "alice in wonderland" communications. If it is good it is very good. If it is bad it is very bad.

Should be no problem but keep the cable away from anything that produces EMI.

Just a thought:

2 RS232 baluns with RJ45 female plug.
If you are running regular comm cables to a patch panel near the spot you need the RS232. Use an RJ45 jumper cable at each balun.

Baluns are your friend.

You could use line drivers - that will convert RS-232 to balanced line (i.e. across 1 pair)

Obviously, you a need a line driver each end...

Best solution I think
