Hi,

I have a server which since installing Sophos is now reporting the RPC service unavailable. In turn its running like a dog. Access to services is unavailable as is netstop from dos.

Have rebooted it but still joy.

Any idea's.

By any chance are you getting a 1069 in your Event Viewer?

Found this on the Sophos site.....

'Why did I get the message 'Error 1069, The service did not start due to a logon failure'?

If you experience this Windows error message, it usually indicates a problem with the configuration of your Sophos Anti-Virus update account (by default SWEEPUPD).

Ensure that the SWEEPUPD account (or your equivalent) exists and has been set up with 'User cannot change password' and 'Password never expires'. The default settings are changed when creating the account.

Ensure that the relevant account on the server has the right to 'Logon as a service'.

Under Windows NT
Run Start|Programs|Administrative Tools|User Manager for Domains
Select Policies|User Rights
Tick the 'Show Advanced User Rights box' and select 'Log on as a service'
Click Add|Show Users
Highlight the chosen account then click 'Add' and 'OK'
Click 'OK'
Under Windows 2000
Run Start|Settings|Control Panel
Double-click 'Local Security Policy'
Within Security Settings|Local Policies, select 'User Rights assignment'
On the right, double-click on 'Log on as a service'
Click 'Add'
Highlight the chosen account and click 'Add'
Click 'OK'
If you are able to complete an installation from a central installation then the 'Log on as a service' right has been assigned correctly.
Check that you have been consistent in the use of your account name (SWEEPUPD) and your password, including the use of capital and lower case letters. This applies both when setting up the account, and in the 'Auto- upgrade account details' screen during workstation installation.

To reset passwords in a Windows NT domain use User manager for Domains.
To reset passwords under Windows 2000 in Active Directory use Active Directory Users and Computers. Right-click on the user name to access the Reset password option.
To reset passwords in a Windows NT peer-to-peer situation, on the affected computer check Start|Programs|Administrative Tools (Common)|User Manager.
To reset passwords in a Windows 2000 or Windows XP Professional peer-to-peer situation, on the affected computer check Start|Settings|Control Panel|Computer Management (Local). Right-click on the user name to access the Set password option.
On Windows XP Professional computers by default you must have a password. A blank is not sufficient.
