RPC Server

Not sure if this is in the right bit but I'm sure I will soon find out....

A couple of the workstations on my network sometimes come up with an error box saying 'the RPC server was unavailble'

Firstly what is my RPC server, I know it stands for remote procedure call but I don't physically know what it is!

Also any ideas how to fix it?

It sound like they use a service where they need RPC to locate the port number, like NFS.
Are they remotely mounting any file systems??
