RPC Server error

Going back to this one, I have a networked machine that will not run any of the 'help' services, tried a lot of things in the past. Linney's answer to another post prompted me to try running the sfc tool. (I may have tried this before)
typing sfc /scannow results in the following message in the command window.

Windows file protection could not initiate a scan of protected system files
0x000006ba [The RPC server is unavailable]

Checking the services list [after a normal start] showed RPC as Manual and not running.
Forcing a start changes it to started.

But the same error message is returned on running sfc (as if RPC has not actually started at all)

I have tried various patches on this machine in the past none have fixed this.
Applying SP3 didn't fix it.
The machine is generally slow even after a good clean up.
About the only thing I haven't tried is an 'R' re-install of Windows, the original disk is SP1, but I have an SP2 version not sure if that will work.
Any other recommendations?

Slight error in that.
The RPC service was listed as 'started', it was the locator service that was off.

I am assuming you have read all of these:

You receive a "The RPC server is unavailable" error message when you open Disk Management in Windows XP

Describes steps that you can take to resolve "The RPC server is unavailable" error when you try to run the Active Directory Migration Tool on a computer that is running Small Business Server 2000 or Windows Small Business Server 2003.

Error Message: Error 1722: The RPC Server Is Unavailable

The RPC server is unavailable

This talks about Printers but some interesting stuff in the replies:

Error: 'RPC Server is unavailable'

Ben

"If it works don't fix it! If it doesn't use a sledgehammer..."

Ben: Most of those are not relevant as the problem seems to be local.
The computer (XP Pro SP3) is in a Workgroup and not connected to a Domain server.

As you say the last one has some interesting posts which I will follow up tomorrow. and then go home for a well earned Christmas break!
Its unlikely to be an infestation though, I have run several deep scans using different AV Tools, nothing is ever found.

tlccousin: Tried that one, and several like it, it doesnt seem to be anything to do with the Help service itself, so these reg hacks don't work.

I cannot get the slipstreaming tool to run, tried it on 2 machines, multiple downloads. It just drops out at different points.

I think you can make a slipstream CD manually?

I have run the MJs diagnostic before but here's the log, I don't see any problems here?

A common problem with HTML Help 1.x is DLLs not correctly registered during installation. This utility checks all components and registers DLLs if required. We also report if the RoboHelp DLL is registered, and if MS Help 2 components are installed and registered.

Thanks Ben. I already found nlite and a web page explaining how to use it. Running now!

I dont know if this will be an issue, perhaps you do?

The machine with the problem is one of a pair of almost identical 2Ghz Celeron Machines that we got from a local Builder (ISL) a few years back (2003 I think) both had XP Pro SP1 pre installed. But with the Install CD in the box.
I Updated both to SP2 using a PCPLUS Cover CD.

The possible problem is I dont now know which CD goes with which machine, will that matter?

I am going to attempt to make the Slipstream disk on my own machine, not the one with the problem.

The first install disk I tried gave a CRC error in nLite, Wrong disk or Bad disk?

Steve: N.M.N.F.

As long as you enter the correct Product Key for each machine, if it is asked for, then the CD media used ought not to matter.

To find out if those missing itcc.dll and hha.dll are relevant to your problem, just run the tool on a machine which is not having problems (perhaps the similar one you mentioned) and compare results.

If you are getting CRC errors from the CD creation try reducing the burning/write speed and look at the brand and even color and type of the writable CD (CD-R or CD-RW) you are using.

As Linney mentioned, it should not matter what CD is used, as long as they are both the same type of XP, e.g. both have OEM XP Pro, if one is Media Center or HOME then yes it could be a problem... but I am assuming that they are both PRO versions...

The first install disk I tried gave a CRC error in nLite, Wrong disk or Bad disk?
most likely a BAD DISK...

Ben

"If it works don't fix it! If it doesn't use a sledgehammer..."

I tried again with the other disk and didnt get an error. The XP CD's are Identical So I guess the slipstreamed OP should do the job.
My burner failed to work correctly and we only had 1 blank CD available so this continues after the Christmas break.

linney, Ben Have a Good Christmas!!

OK heres the update.

Not good news !

Spilstream CD is created and seems to be working but...

When enteriing Repair mode, it asks for the administrator password. As I dont think one has been set. I hit return but the installer drops out to a DOS Prompt.

I think (not sure) that this is beacuse it requires a Password.
So again as far as I can see the only way to set the adminisatrtor password is in Safe mode.

But the machine wont boot in safe mode!
Again I think I know why, it stops in the driver load table just after AGP440.sys .
This machine has a dual monitor setup with 2 video cards One AGP the other PCI. I think this is causing the problem. But I cant see anyway out of this other than removing one video card.

Cheers for the link Ben, but did you read what you have to do to disable the driver and fix the problem?

i.e. Run the Recovery console!!! (after entering the administrator password)

Steve: N.M.N.F.

Now it wont boot from the CD!! (It did on the first attempt)

I hit return but the installer drops out to a DOS Prompt".

Is that a C:/Windows> prompt or just a black screen with a flashing - dash? From what you are saying I think you may have actually entered the correct password and therefore successfully entered the Recovery Console?

If you stuff up with the password it gives 3 goes to get it right then if you don't put in the correct password it offers you the option to exit the Recovery Console.

At this prompt you are seeing what happens if you type the word "Help"?

Do you want to enter the Recovery Console in the first place? Or did you mean to perform a repair install, as they are different animals?

How to install and use the Recovery Console in Windows XP

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP (Q315341)

Cheers for that linney, Doh confused by the
press 'R' key Starts recovery console.
as opposed to
Press 'R' key to repair. (but later in the proccess)
