Hi

I turned on remote desktop from the system properties. The problem is that when I try to connect I get a message saying that the RPC server is unavailable.

I have checked the RPC service on the server and it is running and I have also restarted the server but this didn't work either.

I can ping the server name, IP address and reverse lookup so I think that the DNS is setup OK.

Can anyone suggest anything please?

Do you have any of the firewalls on. On either the server or client?

If aint broken, dont try n fix it!!!!!

I only have the ISA client on the server and there is nothing in that to configure.

I have found out the followin information

1) you can RDP onto the server and login successfuly if you login to the local box, not the domain.

2) You can RDP out from the box

The windows direwall is not running on the server

I have 2 different messages now

When I try to RDP in to the server using the computer name it says that the network address is invalid

when I use the IP address it says the RPC server is unavailable

It really sounds like a firewall blocking that port, the fact that you cant reach it by name is something else. Just double check your Windows firewall settings, or if need be any router firewalls that may be in the way. If you can ping it, and those services are started that in my opinion could be the only other thing. I am pretty sure default port is 3389, and there is an exceptions tab in the service definitions in Windows Firewall for RDP

Hi,

Just had another thought on this.

You are not running any VPN client at start up are you?

For some unknown reason this has now started working....

Hate it when that happens

I didn't have any VPN software running

I had the same issues and when i deleted and recreated the user profile on the remote machine it seemed to work fine.

Not sure if its related.
