I get this message when I try to add a gateway to my unix server (IBM AIX v 5.2):
----------------------------------------------------
Method error (/usr/lib/methods/chginet)
0514-068
0821-279 Writing to routing socket: Cannot reach the destination network
----------------------------------------------------

I am able to ping the server from my computer at the office, but I don't get any answer from a ping request, I just get this:
----------------------------------------------------
Pinging testserv.domain.local [10.1.1.7] with 32....

Request .....
Request .....
------------------------------------------------------

It seems like it does find the server ip address but does not get any answer back.

Does anyone know what might cause this?

Can you provide a traceroute to the IP

traceroute ***.***.***.***

also the output of

netstat -rn

also is there a firewall between you and the server?

Your DNS knows the server, or it is listed in your hostfile, that's why it "knows" the server.
As mrn suggested, please post the routing table, so we can see more details
