Hello,

I'm hoping someone could shine a light on my problem. I've configured a Protocol based VLAN and routing works great. Could ping the interfaces on the other router(Cisco 2500). Delete the Protocol VLAN, configure it to be a Subnet based VLAN, routing no longer works. Could no longer ping the interfaces on the other router. Both were configured to use RIP w/triggered updates on. The router port is configured to be part of the Subnet based VLAN also.

Thanks.

Have to ask, Is the router interface in the same network as the subnet based VLAN? My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my knowledge.

Did you set a virtual Vlan GW address? Yes.

Have to ask, Is the router interface in the same network as the subnet based VLAN? Not the interface but the port the router is plucgged into is in the VLAN.

If I understand correctly the router port is not configured to the same subnet that the VLAN is configured for. If this is the case then the subnet VLAN is working correctly. The router interface will need to be in that subnet before that VLAN will allow any traffic to or from it. My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my knowledge.

A Subnet-based vlan technically is defined as a secondary gateway, while a Protocol-based (Policy-Based) vlan is created as a primary tcp/ip gateway. A secondary IP gateway (Subnet)requires a primary gateway to accept routing broadcast so it can re-broadcast it on its subnet (IP Split Horizon must be disabled).
