When we bought the switch, we connected all computers in a single VLAN which is VLAN1. Our business needs to add more VLANS and each of them should be able to connect to the internet. VLAN1 has all computers & internet access. The router and the management port are also connected to this VLAN1. The switch considers each VLAN as a virtual interface. I am trying to assign an IP address to the VLAN1 interface so that I could add routes between this VLAN and the new VLANs I eventually create. While doing that it gives an error saying that there was an IP address conflict.

your mentioning a "management port". i assume you have configured a mgmt ip, which in fact is the vlan1 ip addr. i believe nortel does not support secondary ip's on older releases.

can you attach your config and the exact error message?
