Can anyone give me advice on what I should be doing to keep the servers running well, apart from looking at the event log etc.? Is there a white paper on server maintenance anywhere?

Most use some type on monitoring system. Just depends on your budget - MS MOM, BMC, Tivoli, IPSentry, etc...

You should be monitoring each of your four Hardware subsystems:
1. CPU
2. RAM
3. DISK
4. Network

Software:
1. Services
2. Processes

Thanks for the speedy reply, I was thinking more of manual checks, I thought maybe there was a document by microsoft detailing what to do but I cannot find anything useful

What exactly do you mean by manual checks? The Event log, Task Manager and System Monitor are as about as manual as you can get.

For diskspace - you can create a script that reports what's available
Windows Updates - Check Add/Remove programs or run the WMIC command
Disk Defrag - You can always schedule a job to run defrag in the background or check disk administrator once a week

Yes thanks, defrag is the sort of thing I was talking about, is there any utility that can be run on a server to sort out the registry or is that a bad thing to do? Our servers are probably coming to the end of their lives and we want to keep them going for a bit longer
