Our small office subscribes a cable modem connection for internet. The modem connects to a Linksys router and all workstations connect to the router to share the internet access.

Can the network adminstrator monitor our webmail (i.e. yahoo, hotmail, etc.) with some kind of setup?

cchen.

They can monitor a certain amount of what you are doing especially if they install some form of key logging software, but as for monitoring your webmail accounts then as Auger said the answere is no.

cchen,

I would still not do anything that you would not want your employer to see on Company PC's.

Hi ,

I feel that it can be done if there is any kind of monitoring tool installed on a system and it monitors all the traffic of router ( TO and FRO).There are tools which taps the traffic then it can be done

Yes

They are a number of ways for the administrator to monitor your traffic.

1. On your pc, with and without software
2. Between router and cable modem with a sniffer
3. On the local network switches.

these are some of the more common means.

I would say that if you need to ask this question, then you should not be doing it a work. See your company computer use policy, if you have one.

Some companies allow personal use of Email/cell phones/beepers etc.

The network admin can monitor any of your web based emails simply by putting a sniffer on port 80. This will give him the ability to access all incoming and outgoing data. He can choose to record any domain, such as hotmail, yahoo etc. He can also log all your incoming and outgoing AIM, MSN and YAHOO chats and this is all without even touching your PCs. If he puts a keylogger on your PC then he can log anything you type, any website you visit, all your passwords to anywhere on the web.
