Ever since I installed a router to permit all my home computers to share the same ADSL account, I have not been able to upload files on Windows Messenger (MSN Messenger). I still receive files from friends but cannot send. I've turned off both the firewall feature in the router and Windows XP's firewall feature but with no results. All the computers on the network or Win XP. Any ideas?

Well there are peoples on here that would disagree with me...however seeing as you have tried turning off your firewall to help, I'll give you this suggestion...with a use at your own risk comment added to it.

on a linksys router...you may put the computer you want to have access to uploading files from msn messenger into port #4, and in the router configuration, go to the dmz host tab and put in the ip address for that computer, that will allow that pc access to those features. However it does mean your pc is open....so that part is up to you sometimes discussion is the only way to learn

Arirang,

You do not mention the type router but in general, Messenger File Transfer is not able to traverse a NAT firewall. Some firewalls/routers have included logic in the Application Layer Gateway (ALG) to accomodate this. Linksys has included this support in their x.42.x series firmware and above. You will need to be running this firmware and disable the XP firewall, if running. This link
explains it further but you will need to wade through the "other" issues in the thread. Hofbrau indeed has a very clear understanding of the workings of Messenger.

Regarding putting the host in the DMZ, note a few things:
[ul][li]I don't believe putting a host in the DMZ will eliminate the problem because it is an inability of Messenger file transfer to traverse a NAT firewall.[/li]
[li]Putting a host in the DMZ eliminates all firewall protection and opens the host completely to the internet.[/li]
[li]It is NOT necessary to use port 4 on a Linksys router to enable the host to be in the DMZ. When setting up the DMZ host, you specify the IP address of the host. The host with that IP address, regardless of physical port, is considered to be in the DMZ.[/li]
[li]If it is a Linksys router, upgrading the firmware to the most current version will correct the issue without the security issues of using the DMZ.[/li][/ul]

Hope that helps.
