I type:
route add default 10.0.0.11
It comes back:
route: not found
I tried:
route add default gw 10.0.0.11
and got the same answer, does any one know why I can not set my default gateway?

First, you are "root", right? You didn't just "su", which won't properly set your PATH- either use "su -" or login for real. Or be specific "/etc/route"

Second- this won't permanently set your gateway anyway: see faq58-1436

But:

/etc/route is (or should be) a symlink to the real route command. If none of the above is your problem, Check that an ls -l of /etc/route points to something that exists.
