Rounded corners on objects please help

I have an image that im using as a background in illustrator and cannot round the corners of it. Ive tried effect/stylise/rounded corners and when I use effect/convert to shape/rounded rectangle it converts the image to a shape and I loose the image ;( Filter/stylise/rounded corners is greyed out I guess because it cant do it on an image. Can anyone help me I desperately need to round the corners off as it is for a sticker we are having printed and it needs rounded corners.

Hi,

Create a rectangle with rounded corners and place it on top of the Image.
Select the rectangle and the image beneath. Got ot Object>Clipping path>Create.

Voilà.
