Just curious:

Was wondering how you guys build your systems: what goes onto rootvg and what goes on external storage (SSA/SAN/etc..)

I currently build my servers like this:
rootvg has, the OS, and application code (db2, websphere)
uservg has, the application data

How do you guys do this?

rortvg has the O/S home etc so the mksysb is small and easy to retore all applications, dat and app log on datavg's

and, yes, you probably want the application/s on a different vg from their data, again to make backups, and heaven forbid restores, easier.
so:
rootvg - aix only
appvg - aplication install
datavg - aplication data
