How do you set up a password for the 'root' user after you have already created some databases? I am using MySQL and the GUI from 'dbtools'. When I set a password for the root user I could no longer get into the databases.

Should this be done from command line only?

I really need to secure the "root" user ASAP

I strongly recommend that you not use the "root" user for day-to-day access. Create another user for that.

There is a MySQL admin app (called "mysqladmin" on unix-like OSes) that allows you to change a password for a user.
