Hello all, for some reason someone has set root password expiry and I not no longer able to su into root from my login. The server is up and running as I can ssh into the box with my login. However, I have tried to console access into the box to reset the root password but on my hyper-terminal I see the 'OK' prompt only, how can I change the root password at this stage? Another confusing thing is the box is up and running normally, why am I still seeing the 'OK' prompt at console?

Thanks all!!!

if u cant get to reset root passwd.. i think u have to recover it from cdrom or image off of a jumpstart box..

The reason you are seeing the OK prompt is because you are logging in through the console port. Type console and it will give you your prompt back. There are a few ways to reset the password on root. One is boot up from the CDROM and clear the root password holder in /etc/passwd file. The other solution is if the expiration settings are defined in a default file, you can modify that.

the expiration settings are defined in /etc/shadow .. u cannot modify the file if u are not root

Hi all, thanks for your help. I have managed to console in and reset the passwd and changed it to disable aging. however, im not unable to su into root with the new root passwd? get error:

$ su - root
Password:
su: Sorry

Any idea's whats going on?

What version of Solaris? If it's Solaris 8, what revision of patch 108993 do you have installed?

I have had some odd things happen (and still happening) on a system with 108993-18 regarding root password expiry. When it expires I am unable to su to root to change the password unless I am on the system console.

How did you reset the password and disable aging on the console, just using the passwd command? Or did you edit /etc/shadow manually. Perhaps there's a typo in one of the fields?

Forget that, my mistake, all worked fine! thanks all!!
