root password and raid

hi

my friend has probs changing the forgotten root pass on his redhat 7.3
he is able to boot into the single mode, but he gets a read only filesystem and can't change it to rw, we assume that's because of the raid he has there
he told me that he tried everything he could find on the web whats's dealing with the forgotten root pass
any help how to change the filesystem to rw or better how to change the password?

he forgot to mount /proc before remounting to rw mode
