Hi,

Are there any nasty side-effects caused if a root partition was to fill-up completely,

cheers,
Andrew

Only in the sense that your system would gradually (or possibly not so gradually) grind to a halt. Is that nasty enough for you? ;-)

Why would that happen?

cheers,
Andrew

Because it's always a good idea to leave at least 5% (10% is preferable) for a filesystem's 'own use' in the sense of housekeeping etc. This applies particularly if /var is part of a root filesystem and not mounted seperately, as it contains logfiles and spool files which are regualarly being written to.

Root partion should only be very small like about 750MB. All other stuff should be on a seperate slice. Once the root partion fills the box will come crashing down around you.

I am in the process of writting a HowTo resize root without obliterating the rest of the disk. Once its written I will stick it up here.
