I have some box's that I can log onto directly as root and others that I have to log on as myself first and then su - to root. Can anyone tell me where I can change this so that I can log on straight as root?

Depends on your Unix vendor and version, so you will need to supply that info.

But being able to login directly as root is a security hazard, and you are better off changing the ones where you can so that you need to use su instead!!.

We have many flavors running but the prominent ones seem to be Redhat and AIX.

As for Versions...the same....out Linux box's are no more than 7 and AIX is up-to-date!

sshd_config if I am understanding you and
the permitrootlogins config option.

I'd not allow root logins.
Keys are easy to use and allow the same kind
of flexibility you are lloking for.
man ssh-keygen.

So I saw that this entry was set to YES....so I pounded it out within sshd_config and then I restarted SSH in init.d but I can still login as root???

I'm not sure, but maybe the default is "yes"? Try setting "permitrootlogin" to "no" and restarting.
