Hello:

I was hoping someone could help me. I run SCO Unix v5.06, and my root mailbox was totally full (2700+ messages) I have tried everything, including viewing each message and then trying to delete it but can affect no change to the folder (ie none of my changes save in any way). I stopped recieving mail to the mailbox about a month ago. I finally went into the file/usr/mail/spool and deleted the e-mail's theat were in there from the file.

Now however, I can open the root mail and it is empty, but I still get no e-mail from my Backup server or uucp. Also whenever I try to close the mail program, it asks me to save changes then, after an endless amount of time, gives the message "unable to save changes to the folder" Does anyone know HOW I CAN FIX THIS PROBLEM AND GET MY ROOT MAILBOX WORKING AGAIN.

Any help you could provide would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

With custom you may try to remove the SCO OpenServer Enterprise System UNIX Mail Utilities and then reinstall it.

Hope This Helps, PH.

If you are running MMDF, stop the delivery daemon:
# /usr/mmdf/bin/daemon stop

Check in /usr/spool/mail for any file which includes "root" in its name. You might have a "root.lock" or ".root.pop". If you don't care about existing contents, delete these files.

Then create a new "root" file:

# touch /usr/spool/mail/root
# chown root:sys /usr/spool/mail/root
# chmod 600 /usr/spool/mail/root

Check the contents of /usr/spool/mmdf/lock/home and its subdirectories.

Run "deliver" manually to see what's going on:
# /usr/mmdf/bin/deliver -w | more

Restart MMDF:
# /usr/mmdf/bin/daemon start
