As you are aware a part of Oracle installtion on UNIX hosts requires that the DBA has root access. This is not necessarily a technical problem but a procedure matter. I have a view that DBAs should not have root access and UNIX guys should not put DBA hat on, otherwise you will end up in all sorts of mess.

During the process of Oracle installtion, Oracle requests to open a second window and few scripts to be run as root. I would rather the SA do this part than giving the DBA temporary or permanent root access.

Your opinion is appreciated.

Learner,

Having the Unix SA run the "root.sh" script at the appropriate juncture is the administratively appropriate path to follow. That way, neither the DBA acts as an SA and the SA does not do anything as a DBA.

I agree (although I act as both at this shop through necessity). An alternative might be to use sudo to allow the DBA access only to certain commands such as root.sh
