Rockwell / Conexant HP Riptide modem setup for W2K

I had trouble with setting up a Rockwell riptide modem on a Hewlett Packard Pavillion 6648C after upgrading to Win 2000 until I followed these instructions.

Of course HP is no help at all.

Trying to fix Riptide Combo Modem/Audio driver problem in HP for win2000. I downloaded win2000 "Unsupported" driver update. It did not help me. Going to device Manager I first looked for all ? yellow symbols for missing driver icons. At start there were 3 of them. One for Audio, one for modem and one for PCI Simple Communications Controller. Neglecting last one PCI Simple Communications Controller I successfully installed audio drivers using the latest download from HP website. But my modem was still a headache. Finally I looked for this option PCI Simple Communications Controller and read following comments on a website and followed them to fix

start menu / run / Devmgmt.msc
select the PCI Simple Communications Controller
open its properties / driver page
Select Update Driver
Select choose from Display a list of known drivers ...
Select modems
select Conexant as the manufacturer (Rockwells modem group).
The Rockwell HCF PCI Modem is the only choice. " .
