Hi,

I need to enable roaming users to access their mailboxes (They are still on the LAN but different machines). All the users can access their mailboxes on own machine without problems. But when they login on another machine, they get the following message:

"Unable to open default email folder. You do not have permission to log on"

Note that all the mailbox reside on the server. I was under the impression that exchange and Win NT LAN would have allowed this by default.

What do I need to do?

This is a result of the exchange/outlook combo working correctly. In order to access a mailbox on exchange, the outlook profile(mail/fax setting in control panel) is required to be set up with the user. If a user who is not set up attempts to logon to the exchange server they will receive this error. There are several ways to solve this, the way I did it was to set up the exchange webmail and have everyone who was not at their "home/normal" pc access their mailbox via the web. I understand that this may not be ideal for everyonen who doesn't have the time or hardware to facilitate this change... so another solution is to create multiple profiles under the exchange server properties in the mail and fax settings (on each individual pc), when set up correctly and someone opens outlook it will prompt them to choose a profile, if they are logged on as themselves and choose their profile they will be able to access their mailbox. A caveat to worry about here though... you would have to do this for virtually every user on every workstation that user may ever use. Hope this helps a little...

Here's a site to download a roaming profile setup utility for Outlook. Basically it relocates what are usually local files into a directory you specify in the users profile. You still have to do it for each user but once its done they can log in anywhere. Its not perfect but its getting there. There are some other bits and pieces on this site you might find useful too.

Enjoy

Carl
