when a user logs into my Domain Controller she gets this message. im pretty sure i set the correct path next to "profile path". any suggestions

Windows cannot locate the server copy of your roaming profile and is attempting to log you on with your local profile. Changes to the profile will not be copied to the server when you logoff. Possible causes of this error include network problems or insufficient security rights. If this problem persists, contact your network administrator.

DETAIL - Access is denied.

If I remember correctly, you have to map a drive to the folder were your profile is stored even if it is on the same machine (DC).

hmmm. do you mean map a drive on the workstation.
i tryed that already and i still get the same message. the roaming profile doesn't seem to be activating. its always resorting to local profile.

\\HQ-RES-DC-01\Profiles\%username%

when i put this into the path. it changes the name to the specified user but it does not automatically create the users folder in Profiles.

I manually created the users folder in Profiles and it seems to work when i log in. but when i log out (when the profiles should be copied to the users folder) it comes up with a similar error message.

I only have to share the Profile folder, right?

how do i get windows to create the folder when the user logs in?

thanks for the info tertone100..
I did what you said but it still does the same thing when the user logs off.

Did you check-out the link? It's been a while since I used roaming profiles, I remember that problem and that it was somthing simple that I found on that link. Sorry but I am doing stuff to my network and just don't have the time to try it but if I do I will be sure to post it.

Hi Barnyard
Have you got in your profiles folder a directory called %username% this is needed to automatically create the users dir. This is also needed in the userdirs directory for automatic creation of the users dir.
Where is your profile dir.

No i don't have a dir called %username% in my Profiles dir.

where is the userdirs directory.

My profile dir is located c:\documents and settings\profiles

is there possibly user right that i need to assign in order for there profiles to be writen to there dir. hmm

The way to fix this problem is to set Full Control to the Share on the Shares Security Tab. The default is set to Change but it cannot write the ACL information unless you set it to full controll. Then when the user logs on it will automatically create the Directory.

Hi.
I haven't read the answers above so I might repeat one of these answers...

1st
- you share a folder on the server and give him the name "USERS" . You set this folder's security : Everyone : read&execute, list folder contents, and read to ALLOW.
Here you make directories where you want the profile settings to be stored. For example you have a user named USER_1 , then make a dir named USER_1 and set full control for this user at the security tab for this folder.

2nd
- in the active directory select user USER_1 and set at the profile tab profile : "\\your server's name\USERS\USER_1"

This should work, expetct when doesn't.

The cases when doesn't work :

1. the disk quotas are enabled and the user's profile directory on the server is larger then the space limit on the local drive. In this case the usre cannot log on and you get the message : The user cannot be log on........... there is not enough space on disk

2. the share or the security permissions are not set correctly (the user has no rights to write to \\server\USER.
See the share permissions tab at my computer(right click)->manage->shares->.......

3. in some cases when the user is logged on to more workstations than a single one there are some problems with the profile loading and saving, too.
For this problem i don;t know the problem yet. Sorry

This is all i can give to U.
Bye.
Write back please, so i can see was i helpful or not.?!
