The problem:
Icons keep reappearing on the desktop even after the user deletes them.
On testing this is what I found:
Icon Creation Test:
User logs on and creates icons on the desktop.
These icons get created in the local profile on the machine but not on the network profile.
User logs off and logs back on.The icons are still in the local profiles folder but have now been created on the network profile folder on the server.
User logs off and reboots the machine, as before the icons are in both local profile folder and in the network profile folder.
Icon Deletion TestFollow on from above using the same icons)
User logs on and deletes the icons. The icons are deleted from the local profiles folder but not deleted from the network folder.
(Heres the key bit)
User logs off and on again.Icons have now been cleared correctly from the network profile folder and as before from the local profile folder. This is the correct way that roaming profiles behaves.
If the user does not logoff correctly after deleting the icons and merely reboots the machine-(I know this may sound strange but some users actually do that!!!)-then the network profile does not get updated with the icon deletion, so when the user next logs in, the icons have reappeared.
Conclusion:
User roaming profiles will not work/behave correctly unless user logons and logoffs are performed as per Windows logon/logoff process.
This is by design and makes good sense but it is surprising what users get up to out there!!!
