Roaming profiles don't work for me...

Hi,

I have 2 Metaframe 1.8 SP1 servers (Server1 and Server2). Server1 is our file and print server. We have little print servers dotted about the place, and 50 users.

Anyway, I've tested roaming profiles but they don't work very well. That's because if one user opens a published app (we have load balancing) and it goes to Server2. And while they're working on it, they open a desktop session to Server1. Now - if they make any changes to their icons, or app settings, or default printer or anything, and then log off, their profile gets updated.

But then they close the published app. The old profile it was working with then gets updated, clobbering the new changes. Am I wrong?

That's just one problem. The other is with printers. I installed the printers on Server1, and they become visible to all users, but they're not visible on Server2. And if I create a printer as a network connection to the printer on Server1, it only gets created for the current user - I can't get it to happen for all users.

Am I missing something? or are these problems that can't be solved?

Thanks.

You could publish the desktop as an app, and have the user session share on the same server.

You may have better luck with a dedicated roaming profile / file / printer server, then connect the printers via the web console (I'm assuming a Windows 2000 printer server). Alternatively, for NT4, setup printers on an LPR port on a printer server and connect to them as network printers.

File/Print server doesn't have to be anything spectacular - a PII 500 with 512Mb RAM and plenty of disk space should do the trick. At a pinch you could use a DC. File/printer services can hammer MetaFrame/Terminal Server performance.

Hope this helps CitrixEngineer@yahoo.co.uk
