We run a help desk for computer users here at a University of California. Our network is NT Server based with Win 2K workstations, plus laptops running mainly XP.The problem that brought me to your site was a laptop configuration issue.
The laptop is XP, and 1)will be used by a group of users as opposed to one and 2)we don't want the roaming profile from the XP machine trying to update the 2K profile on the server. We knew it was a policy somewhere, finally found the answer as a teaser for Windows MS Press Library.
Log on as Admin.
At the run line type: gpedit.msc
In the Group Policy window:
Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/User Profiles.
There are 2 policies to take a look at:
Prevent Roaming Profile changes from propagating to the Server
-and-
Only allow local user profiles
