the company I am working for is thinking about moving to another HW vendor. We are currently running some hp RP8xxx/RP7xxx (PA-RISC) and some hp RX46xx/RX26xx (Itanium) machines with hp-ux. Since these machines are quite expensive, our company is thinking about a new HW/SW architecture.
The idea is to change to Linux, eg. Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and have the opportunity to choose the HW supplyer by best offers.
Does anybody have experience in moving all applications to Linux? Which Linux do you recommend? Do you recommend to buy HW and Linux from the same supplier? Do you have experience in moving from Linux A to Linux B? What problems did you face?
From the current point of few: the admin team would prefere a one hand solution. HW and OS from the same supplier, eg. IBM machine and AIX or HP hardware and hp-ux or Sun Hardware and Solaris. Most suppliers offer "Linux" but this is more or less just a stepchild. hp told us, they never run a full check on Linux patches but they do with hp-ux patches. We are an insurance company, stable systems, NO loss of data is essential to us.
What du you guys (and girls?) recommend?
Best Regards, Franz
