We just installed a new 10g database (10.2.0.3.0) on a Windows 2003 server. I can not get RMAN to do a full backup of this database. RMAN is writing to a network share that he has permissions to write to. The destination server has plenty of space for the rman backup files. RMAN gets as far as starting to create the first file in the backup set, then fails with these errors:

ora-27072 osd-04008 (os)121 The semaphore timeout period has expired

I searched metalink and everywhere else i could think of and can not find any references that would help me fix this problem. I never heard of windows having semaphores. I thought that was strictly a Unix thing???

can anybody give me any idea where to look to fix this problem?

thanks

well, i still dont know what was going on. After a re-start of the file server, rman seems to have healed itself and the error has not come back after a couple of full backup tests...??

bookouri,

well done for informing us of the outcome.

May I suggest that you document this in your local RMAN procedures, so that if it ever happens again, and you are not there, people will know that it is not an RMAN problem, but something to do with the file server.

If someone is desperately trying to recover using RMAN, this may be a life-saver for them.
