Hello..I have a a question and i think that is a rm cobol isue
Forgive me if it is not(and also forgive me english)
I have 2 unix servers. The one (serv1) runs rm cobol 8 (with 200 licenses) an the other one (serv2)rm cobol 7 (with 125 licenses). I have to export a partition of serv1, so the users that login on serv2 can see it. I managed to do this..
Moreover when i print "runcobol" from serv1 i see taht run cobol 8 and so i get from serv2 ..the same when i print "rmcobol' which is ok, of course.
My question is what about the files..Do you think that i may have o problem with them (specially with the license)..?
Because some files are common.
The programmer said that it was my issue and i have to answer really soon if they can use both (cobol 7 and 8) or if they have to buy new licenses for 8
I hope that you understand what i am looking for
Thank you

for a correct solution to this I would advise you to contact your Liant sales representative.

will have further contact details if you need.

Regarding files from V8 anv V7 they are compatible, and both runtimes can access the files at the same time, and this has nothing to do with licensing. If it is only a share, then the runtime you execute in each machine must be located on different paths so you do not share the licenses between machines which could cause problems.

I also think, but I am unsure of that, that you can have both runtimes active on the same machine. Again Liant support will be able to help you with this.

Thank you very much for your respond..I will check about the path that runtime runs on each machine , because i am not sure right now.If it runs in the same i will change the second one from its default to another (eg /user1)
I guess, then, i will not have any problem :)
Thanks again

demetrio,

Contact our London support office, or the distributor for your country (Greece?), for the best information. As Frederico has said, you can get contact information from the Liant web site.

Ok..I didn't have any time today to contact to Liant support office but it is the first thing that i will do tomorrow morning..
As i was testing I got a message COBOL I/O error 94,68 .
I am afraid that Cobol 7 can not access files that are open once from 8.
I am sure that i will get an answer for all of these tomorrow
(at least i hope, so :) )

You are partially correct in this assumption. Typically the file is 'promoted' to a newer version only upon open output, so you will need to be quite careful about that. Also, we strongly recommend against using two different versions of the file manager to update files, because of the precautions that must be observed to avoid file corruption.

One less obvious solution to this problem would be to use InfoExpress. In this particular case your dissimilar COBOL virtual machines would be directing requests for the common files to the file manager within InfoExpress.

However, the most straightforward solution would be to upgrade both servers to the most recent version of the COBOL virtual machine (which will soon be version 11). New version 8 licenses typically are not available.

Now, i am having a similar situation to another costumer. Both unix servers are runnig rm cobol8. I need to run nfs and mount a partition , so remote users hace acces and run the programs of the server.
Both servers are running the same version (each one with its own license )of rm cobol,(licensed for 200 users)...
So, if i mount the partition (the easy part) will i face any problem with the license of rmcobol ?.. Forgive me if am wrong..but i am thinking 200+200 user licenses count as 400 ..or i am wrong..
I do not want for many reasons the one server to use the other server's licenses.
Will that work ? And if it does not what shall i do in order to connect two servers using their own cobol license ?
I hope you understand what i am writing about.

ps.. I think there must be a counter so the system can understand when you excced the 200 users.. Shall i do anything with it ?
I am comfused

Thank you in advanced

Licensing questions should be directed to the Liant distributor, or the London office. Licensing is in part technical, but also a legal issue regarding a business contract, so therefore something that should be communicated between the parties in an official manner. (For normal technical matters I would happily give an answer here on Tek-Tips.)
