I have been given the objective of converting our DataBase files from RM/Cobol to Ascii.
The Cobol version is 5. (7 years old).

RS6000, Unix, Aix 4

IQ Query ver 3 DataBase.

there is a program file called runcobol CNVTDATA. It makes Seq files in ascii, but it converts the entire file, most are very large.

Any Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Paul

Paul,

What are you trying to achieve by doing this conversion?
Tom Morrison

I need to import the data into a MsAccess Database.
Paul

Okay, next question...

Is this a one time event, or do you intend to do this on a regular basis?
Tom Morrison

This will be a one time event only.

We would love to get it in Excel or DBase Format, but would be glad to have it in Ascii.

Tks
Paul

Okay, Paul. I was going to suggest Relativity, a middleware product which provides ODBC (SQL) access to COBOL data. However, for a one shot thing, I doubt that it would be cost effective.

Perhaps the ability to have SQL access to your COBOL data might modify your objective. Here is a link to the Relativity product description:

Best regards,
Tom Morrison

Does the data contain packed or comp fields? Is it ebcdic?
