That depends on the particular Modular Jack hardware. Remember the RJxx spells out a particular wiring arrangement for the type of service needed on the Modular Jack. Not all Modular Jacks are the same, for example: 6-position or 8-position with/without shorting bars. The are different mounting arrangements also.

Though "X" doesn't always indicate a shorting bar AND while both RJ31X and RJ48X call for an 8P8C, the wiring arrangement or pinout is what kills the ability to swap them as like jacks.
You could make your own loopback plug and just use an 8p8c jack without shorting bars, but that's not much fun. We just get RJ48X's from Graybar (Allen Tel p/n AT635CX) They're not very expensive.
