I am trying to expand an Avaya exchange and the expansion port is presented as a RJ45. It has to be expanded over a radio shot which comes up as an X21 serial connection. I am looking for a cable solution to connect the pair, without using media convertors. help please!

Or is this a PRI or CAS T1 from an AVAYA that needs to go to a x21 connection?

See what happens when you use the WRONG terminology? You don't get the right answer, and waste peoples' time!!!

An RJ45 is NOT, NEVER DATA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is a wiring arrangement for Tip/Ring Dialtone on an 8 position Modular Jack with padding resistor. (IT did not invent telephony, nor did Cisco.)

But an 8P8C MODULAR JACK / PLUG can be configured for the appropriate application, be it data or phone.

Get your terminology correct, then you will get better answers, and posts.

Someone may need to revist the application and/or choice of hardware. Don't be fooled into thinking that the radio's DB-15 interface can be adapted via cable the same way that a DB-15 DSX-1 voice interface can.

X.21 is sort of the European analogy to V.35 (a term that I'm sure you've heard of). So if you're a Cisco router kind of guy, it would be like asking someone for a cable to adapt the serial interface with a T1 WIC. Yeah...ain't gonna happen.

What you're going to need instead is an external CSU on each end that has an X.21 DCE interface, plus DA15 cables to mate the CSUs to the radios (a crossover DA15 cable is probably needed). You'll also need a "standard" T1 patch cord (straight or crossed will depend on the CSU manufacturer) to mate the Magix DS1 ports with each CSU's DSX-1 port.

I'm super curious as to where those radios came from. Synchronous serial is/was used for everything from mainframe communications to ATM machines.

Good post Tim and good to see you on here.

If you tell us a little more Danny about what it is you are trying to connect, we may be able to give you the right cable or an Avaya pn. for what you need to connect. If we can't, post in the Avaya forum and someone may be able to help there.

Jim thats just not helpful and not normally like you to post something negative. You know we have all levels of knowledge enter here. So we have to help depending on that level of knowledge. I see some that "I just say no" to because of lack of time to put into it.

If you see one thats just too wrong, let it go brother..

When is the last time you helped someone, just because you were able to?
