Hi All,

I've recently been tasked with cabling our voice systems as well as our data systems. One of the first things we are looking to do is slowly migrate our voice infrastructure to Cat 5. I've sorted all the cabling apart from the bit that goes from the socket to the phone which seems to be an RJ45 to RJ11 cable with 2 pairs wired.

Having searched the net to buy some all I can seem to find is ADSL RJ11 to RJ45 cables, before I go off and buy these can anyone advise as to whether they will do the job?

Many Thanks

Jez

standard rj11/rj11 line cord will work just fine , no need to make a dual ended cable

I can say we use standard rj11/rj11 line cords all the time and I have never seen a problem .

anybody who works with partner phones they have a rj45 plugs on both the phones and modules and out of 100's Ive installed and worked on Ive only seen a few use 8 conductor cords and
Ive never seen a problem that cn be attributed to use of rj11

At my city hall they have a Norstar system, all the jacks/patch panels are Cat6, so they just made up RJ11 to RJ45 line cords. They didn't want to risk damaging the pins in the Cat6 jacks.

I had the same issue where i work....the phones use the cat 5 cabling and existing network points.

The cables from the phones to the wall are also RJ11 to RJ45 - I needed to extend one cable due to the desk position of a new starter. I was unable to find an RJ45 to RJ11 cable, being told that this was U.S. standard and not sold in the big stores in the UK eg. PC World (I do not know if this is true or not).

So I bought an RJ11/RJ11 ADSL cable - and this has worked fine with no problems at all. I just got an RJ11/RJ11 coupler and used it to extend the cable I already had.

So the ADSL cable worked fine for me. Perhaps buy one and test first.

how will you use an RJ11 terminated cable with an RJ45 socket though?

you just plug them in , they will work just fine how did you plug your rj11/rj11 "adsl cable" in ?

Well I got an RJ11 to RJ11 coupler and used it as an extension to an RJ11 to RJ45 cable.

I wasnt aware that and RJ11 cable would fit into an RJ45 socket!

cyber,

that is what we have been trying to tell you :).

It will fit, and it will work.

And it is also a fine source of debate was to whether or not the RJ-45 jack will be damaged in the long run by this (see the aforementioned thread.

Cheers

well theres todays new piece of knowledge!

When we cable new offices we generally do both voice and data in cat5 with cat5 mod plugs. (rj45 inserts) Rj11's are 4 pin and when they are plugged into an rj45 mod-plug, pins 2 and 3 (center pins) line up exactly with pins 4 and 5 of the RJ45, which are used for voice, and if its a 2 pair phone system, on a rj11, 2 and 3 line up with 4 and 5 and pins 1 and 4 on the rj11 line up with pins 3 and 6 on the mod plug.

rj11 pins 1 2 3 4
rj45 pins 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
