for God's sake help me!! Have a merlin legend mlx-20l PBX and am taking an RJ45 to a DB9 to attach it to my PC. This is for a call accounting system called "Profitwatch". However, I cannot seem to find out the "correct" Pinouts so I can convert the RJ45 to the DB9. We have tried several ways and configurations and double checked the Com port. The PBX is not transmitting any data to the PC. Everyone tells us its the "Pin" set up. We had an old call accounting system that used the direct plugin of an RJ45 and it worked fine...so we unplugged and the only difference is the DB9 conversion. Does ANYONE know what the pinouts should be????

i got this from pbxinfo.com
Green = pin 3
Red= pin 1
Black = pin 2
Yellow = pin 5
Short pins 4&6 together
Short pins 7&8 together
this is for inter-tel, though.
try posting your question in the Tek-Tips Avaya Merlin forum. jeff moss

I would be very carefull with this one. If I get a chance, I'll try to find you the correct pin out.

Please keep in mind that you should have a pin for pin layout of how to connect this, or a specific layout of which pin on the 8 pin jack does what serial function. I'm not sure where Jeff is getting the colors, but depending on what plug you plug into the 8 pin jack on the PBX you could have different colors on different pins.

Now if you are going to use a regular cable from the PBX to a modular to DB-98 adapter, beware that those things are not all wired the same depending on where you get them.

Also, use caution in shorting two pins together unless you specifically know the function of them. There should be no reason to short two pins together out of the KSU unless you are bypassing the hardware flow control functions. This can be done, but make sure you know which pin does which function before you go shorting things together.

One inexpensive investment for work like this is the little RS-232 breakout box. You can find them on ebay often for $15-20 and you insert it between the two devices to see what is going on. Serial is one of my favorite challanges, it is a beautiful 'standard' that each manufacturer decides to implement only a portion of. If I had a dollar for every time one device wouldnt talk to another...and required jumpering or reconfiguring...

Anyway, try to find the correct pin out for your device before shorting things together.

Good Luck!

Oh, re-reading your original post, if you are sure the PBX is not spitting out any data, i suspect you have it enabled for hardware flow control. This requires one (or more) pins to be held in a particular state from the PC end to tell the PBX it is ok to send data. Again the serial breakout box is a must for testing, IMHO.

I asked around about the pinout since I need one for an Inter-Tel phone system. The person gave me those colors and pins for using a standard patch cable (568B)I am not sure if the pinout is the same since these are totally different systems. jeff moss

Just get a ATT/Lucent/Avaya 355A adapter and a DB-25 to DB-9 adapter. If you insist on rolling your own, here is a cut-n-paste that should give you the pinout:

The pin out sequence is:
Mod Plug                            25 DB male
1                        to                     22
2                        to                    6 and 8
3                        to                     20
4                        to                      7
5                        to                      3
6                        to                      2
7 not used
8 not used

The connections are as follows
RJ45 (9Pin Female)
1 9
2 8,6,1
3 4
4 5
5 2
6 3

This is the REAL pinout for who ever needs it. I have tried this on BOTH the SMDR and ADMIN ports of the Magix and Legend PBXs. I am looking at WINSPM connected to the PBX with this pinout right now:

DB9 - RJ45

Pin1 - Orange
Pin2 - Green
Pin3 - Yellow
Pin4 - Black
Pin5 - Red
Pin6 - Brown
Pin7 - (NOT USED)
Pin8 - White
Pin9 - Blue

The RJ45 side is the side where the colored wires come out of. The DB9 side is the side with the female connectors. Easy as that!
