Modular Plug & Jack Wiring Schemes
Typically, modular patch cords are used for two basic applications: data and voice (phone, modem and fax). Normally data network patch cords are wired “straight-through” (pin 1 to pin 1, pin 2 to pin 2, etc.). Voice patch cords are wired “crossed” (pin 1 to pin 6, pin 2 to pin 5, etc.). The USOC scheme is used for voice and not data because poor transmission performance is experienced with this type of scheme.

Modular Plug Terminology

The standard terminology of RJ11 6P4C means a modular plug or jack with 6 positions and 4 contacts; furthermore, RJ11 6P6C has 6 positions and 6 contacts. Some refer to the RJ11 6P6C as an RJ12. This is technically incorrect since an RJ12 is a 6-position jack with 4 contacts used in telephone applications where registered terminal equipment is not compatible with electrical characteristics of tip and ring behind the line circuit as defined by the Universal Service Order Code (USOC) standard.
