We are trying to boot up a RISC 6000 from a cold start and are getting no where with the boot up. As soon as we get to this screen:

Welcome to AIX.
boot image timestamp: 15:46 09/16
The current time and date: 20:04:17 10/17/2002
number of processors: 1 size of memory: 256Mb
boot device: /pci@fed00000/scsi@b/sd@8:2
closing stdin and stdout...

The box just hangs there...forever.
The last message that we get on the LED screen is the E0518.
We have tried to boot the box using the AIX cd #1 for 4.3.3. The box appears to bypasses the cd-rom and tries to boot from the two hard drives. We have tried to swap the two drives to see about getting at least the boot up but to no avail. Does anyone have any solutions to this problem?

hi,
The error code you receive sounds as
"file system corruption"

From its format I belive your machine is almost a 44P-170.

These machines are not as Windows-one: its is not
sufficent put OS-CD in machine and wait for:
Press Enter to boot from CDROM; you must explicitely say.

Insert CD #1 in, and fire the box.
When 1st icon appears, press F1, before sound (last Icon).
Choose Icon Install-From and select cdrom. Continue.

Read question, confirm all until it ask you for install:

choose Maintenance mode.

At the prompt "start a shell" choose that saying
"before mount file system" ..

When you will receive a shell, enter the commads:

fsck -y /
fsck -y /usr
fsck -y /var
fsck -y /tmp
fsck -y /home

mount all
exit
shutdown -Fr

.....................

the commands fsck (the 1st or 2nd) will clear your dirty jfs

bye

exit
