I am redesigning a system and so am beginning my path on 2008.

On a previous system we deployed via RIS, MSI and WSUS for all the different needs of the system. I am now told that RIS has been replaced with WDS. Okay, must be an improvement.

However, with RIS we used to use answer files to make the deployment unattended. I am being told that 2008 has progressed this so far that every installation needs to be attended. Is this really the case? Are we really going backwards?

No. :)

Download the Windows Automated Installation Kit:

And in the AIK there is a tool called Windows System Image Manager that you can use to create the unattend.xml file that you're need for unattended installs. You can also edit the xml file by hand, but the SIM is much easier.
