I'd like to make a ripple effect. Now I haven't seen this before, and my feeble flash mind would think it couldn't be done, but if there's anything I know about flash... it's that EVERYTHING can be done, it's just a matter of creativity. So... how might I go about making a ripple effect (preferably on text) in Flash? Thanks all...
Liam Morley
lmorley@wpi.edu
<a href=] :: imotic :: website :: [
"light the deep, and bring silence to the world.
hi there,

u can find this sample in flash sample, just go to help and then on samples there will be a sample of ripple effect.

otherwise there is just a simple rule that note in ripple a small circle goes big and then becomes transparent u could try this also, but it would take time.

thanks.. what website are you referring to?

The ripples I've seen on most flash sites don't do exactly what I'd like them to do... mostly, they just look like somebody dropped a pebble on a pond. That's not what I'm after.. here's a better description.

say I have a black background, and grey-ish text. the text would undulate as if it were underwater... but I wouldn't want to see these defined concentric circles, all I want to see is textual distortion. I hope that gives a better description.
Liam Morley
lmorley@wpi.edu
<a href=] :: imotic :: website :: [
"light the deep, and bring silence to the world.
here's somewhat of a GIF demo... something in between these two images:

<img src= src= that helps...
Liam Morley
lmorley@wpi.edu
<a href=] :: imotic :: website :: [
"light the deep, and bring silence to the world.
Hmm that's (hate to say this) impossible to do with coding. You can, of course, animate it by hand. I don't know the possibilties of Javascript in Flash, but i've seen it done in JavaScript (don't ask me how or where... :-(
I'd like to know how they did the "distortion" in the OV logo at <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> too. I think they animated it step by step.

Gasbag-->

Gasbag's Gas-of-the-Day:
<A HREF=" TARGET="_new">

looks like they used masking for part of it.. and for others, just changed the height (they gradually shrank it down to 0 height)...

thanks anyways. If anybody has any ideas.. please let me know. Thanks..
Liam Morley
lmorley@wpi.edu
<a href=] :: imotic :: website :: [
"light the deep, and bring silence to the world.
Have you considered the morphing technique. I am only 1 year into flash and find it awesome to play with. I just recently started messing with morphing and you can do some amazing stuff with it. It just seems that this is one of them. I like challenges so I am going to attempt it. Here is a quick version which needs some help but maybe you get the idea.

Here is the link:
<A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> this helped...

I find the easiest way to achieve the desired ripple effect of text is to export 5 or so frames of the ripple from illustrator (use the vector effects plug in), then use the shape moprphing option with shape hints.
The only problem with this is that it is very time consuming as each letter has to be done separately.
Alternatively you could use the new program 'swish' or 'swift', can't remember the exact name (only runsd on a pc)

good luck
f

Imotic,
I am not really sure how to do the ripple effect that you desire in flash without some really conplex masking or shape tweening. I have however seen at least one example of a ripple effect made by use of a java applet. I don't known if it is what you are looking for but here is the url: <A HREF=" TARGET="_new">
