OK. I have will have multiple sites each with separate VLANs. So Site 1 might have VLANs 1-5 and site two might have VLANs 6-8. The core switches handling these VLANs will be 3560s.

I would rather not configure routing on a stick since the 3560s are multilayer switches and can handle routing between the local VLANs which will allow me to offload this task from the routers. However, I require each of the routers to learn routes to each of the VLANs (including the VLANs at other sites) dynamically using RIP. So, HERE COMES THE QUESTION PART....

If I configure RIP on the 3560s, will the routers be able to learn routes for the locally connected VLANs so that they can pass on these routes to the other routers?

and

If this works, will the 3560s be able to store the routes for all the other VLANs on the network?

Please let me know as I am unsure if the 3560's "full layer 3 routing functionality" is actually full layer 3 routing functionality.

Thanks.

If the 3560 is anything like the 3750 (which i've always understood it is, runs the same IOS, etc...) then it supports full IP routing including the RIP routing protocol - meaning the switch can send and receive RIP route updates.

you may find, depending on what type of connection that you have between sites, that you need to configure route redistrbution between your IGP and your ISP's BGP instance (assuming it is a private connection of course). have you verified with your provider that they will allow you to run a dynamic routing protocol over the connection?? I know that with our service provider the only IGP that they would let us run is OSPF and we needed to redistribute our OSPF routes into their BGP process so that they would be propagated to our remote sites.

Personally, I don't use routing protocols for what you are doing - one static route at each end should cover all your site subnets present and future (assuming they've been intelligently chosen).

Thank you for all of your answers. I have confirmed with my ISP that I can run RIP over the private WAN without issue. I am using dynamic routing over the main WAN and floating static routes over the backup WAN to ensure transparent failover (without the use of multiple routers at each site). There may be other ways of doing this, but this is the method that I have chosen. As long as I know that the switches will send and receive updates, then I'm happy. Thanks again.

I'm with you 100% on this one. Unfortunately there are networks (like the ones that I inherited) that are all over the damn place in terms of network ranges being used with no rhyme or reason for doing so. My environment has a central data center and multiple remote production facilities that MUST be online 24x7x365 with the exception of a four day shutdown period once per year per facility. Luckily that shutdown period is coming up for one of my facilities in Sept where I am going and essentially ripping and replacing every piece of network gear and redesigning the entire topology. I'll get to inject a single summary route into our BGP process and that'll be that. If you can't tell I'm really excited lol

Just summarize like 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0...lol
